Workers threaten 2-day strike at Neste oil refinery in Finland. On Thursday, the Industrial Union of Finland announced that it intended to go on strike for two days at the Neste (NESTE.HE)–owned oil refinery in Porvoo unless the Finnish government agreed to modify its proposed labor market changes. The strike would most likely result in the total shutdown of the plant’s output.

Over the past several months, labor unions in Finland have voiced their opposition to the intention of the right-wing government to prioritize local work agreements above centralized bargaining, restrict political strikes, and make it simpler to cancel employment contracts.

“We hope that the suspension of oil refining will make workers realize that it cannot put the entire burden of public finances on the shoulders of workers,” said shop steward Sami Ryynanen at the Porvoo refinery in a statement. “We hope that the suspension of oil refining will make the government realize that it cannot do that.”

The Industrial Union has announced that a Porvoo strike will occur on February 1 and 2, 2024.

“If the strike were to take place, it would lead to the shutdown of Neste’s Porvoo refinery, which must be carried out in an orderly and safe manner,” a spokeswoman for Neste stated in a statement that was sent out via email.

The looming two-day strike at the Neste Oil Refinery in Finland is a pivotal moment in the energy sector. The unresolved worker grievances and the potential disruptions in operations underline the need for effective dialogue and resolution to ensure the sustained functioning of the refinery and stability within the energy market.
