According to sources inside the industry, Boeing (BA.N.) is now in advanced negotiations with Thai Airways (THAI.BK) to sell around 80 wide-body 787 Dreamliner planes. This comes after Boeing (BA.N) has surpassed Airbus (AIR.PA) in fleet renewal discussions that are extensively observed.
Reuters first reported in September that the airline was increasing its needs to as many as 80 wide-body planes and 15 smaller ones. This sparked competition between the 787 and the A350 for one of the most oversized wide-body orders that Southeast Asian airlines have placed in recent times.
Both Boeing and Airbus will not comment on the matter. Thai Airways did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Thai national airline is attempting to capitalize on the post-pandemic travel boom by expanding regional routes. However, there have been some worries over the capacity of aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing to increase production to meet the rising demand.
In the year 2021, Thai Airways started the process of reorganizing its debt, which was valued at 400 billion baht ($11.17 billion).
