According to a minister’s announcement on Monday, the Japanese manufacturer of electronic components TDK Corporation (6762.T) will be making lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery cells for Apple (AAPL.O) iPhones in India.

As part of its efforts to shift some of its production away from China, Apple has promoted India as its next generation of significant growth drivers.

It started building iPhones in the nation in 2017 with Wistron (3231. TW) and then Foxconn (2317. TW), and it currently has a total of 14 suppliers in India.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Deputy Minister for Information Technology, said on the social media platform X, which was formerly known as Twitter, that TDK will establish a manufacturing plant in the state of Haryana, which will result in the creation of around 1,000 novel employment opportunities.

On Sunday, Business Standard was the first publication to reveal the news publicly. The pioneering endeavor that TDK Corporation has undertaken to manufacture iPhone battery cells in India represents a fundamental shift in technology worldwide. Implementing this strategic step reaffirms the company’s dedication to innovation and ushers in a new age of technical superiority and economic expansion for India.

By incorporating cutting-edge technology and severe quality control procedures, TDK establishes a new standard for manufacturing outstanding battery cells, influencing the direction smartphone technology will take in the present and future.

According to the reported information, Sunwoda Electronics, which is Apple’s lithium battery assembler, would get cells created at the plant. Reuters’ request for comment was not immediately met with a response from either Apple or TDK Corporation.
