According to a story published by Bloomberg News on Thursday, Epic Games, the company that created “Fortnite,” will be firing around 900 workers, or 16% of its workforce.
Because players choose less popular games due to price increases, the industry struggles to recover from a spending downturn.
The article claimed that the layoffs were informed to the employees via an internal memo, citing sources with knowledge of the issue.
The Epic Games staff did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
With fresh competitors like Warner Bros. Discovery, whose “Harry Potter”-themed game “Hogwarts Legacy” has been a great hit, legacy videogame developers have also been vying for the top spots.
Epic and Apple (AAPL.O) have been in a court battle since 2020. The conflict started when Epic said that Apple’s practice of taking up to 30% commissions on in-app purchases made on iPhones and other devices was unlawful under American antitrust laws.
Apple petitioned the US Supreme Court on Thursday, pleading with the court to reverse a ruling from the antitrust case that called for changes to the rules controlling the App Store.
