Spotify tests voice translation features for podcasts. On Monday, the audio-streaming giant Spotify Technology (SPOT.N) said it is developing an AI-powered service to translate podcasts from popular hosts like Dax Shepard and Lex Fridman into various languages.

The function is the Swedish company’s most recent effort to profit from generative artificial intelligence. This technology has become extremely popular since ChatGPT’s emergence to get new users and increase income.

According to Spotify, the translated versions would sound more genuine than conventional dubbing since they will imitate the original speaker’s voice and be powered by freshly released speech generation technology from Microsoft-backed OpenAI.

The business also collaborated with other podcasters, such as Monica Padman, Bill Simmons, and Steven Bartlett, for the piece.

According to Spotify, the voice translations would be offered in languages including Spanish, French, and German for a small number of back episodes and upcoming episode releases, which might increase the series’ viewership.

In the past several years, Spotify has aggressively invested in its podcasting division, hoping that the greater levels of interaction the format offers will attract more advertisers.

But as a result, the company’s operating costs increased, growing last year at a rate twice as fast as its sales growth. Additionally, businesses have reduced advertising budgets due to high inflation and rising interest rates.
