August was the seventh consecutive month in which passenger traffic at Spain’s Aena (AENA.MC) airports approached levels seen before the epidemic. Still, traffic at other European terminals continued to lag.

According to a statement released by the state-controlled airport operator Aena on Tuesday, the number of passengers using Spanish airports during August increased by 9.5% from 2022 to 29.8 million.

It was 1.4% higher compared to the same month in 2019 for the same period.

IAG (ICAG.L) and Ryanair (RYA.I) have lately been lukewarm about demand for the remainder of the year as high inflation and increasing interest rates compress family spending. However, worldwide airlines continued to gain from the comeback in leisure travel during the summer.

The recovery of corporate travel following the pandemic has been slower than that of leisure travel, which is the primary source of revenue for Spanish airports.

According to a report released on Tuesday by Airports Council International Europe, passenger traffic throughout the area in July, which is often the busiest month of the summer, came closer than ever before to a complete return to pre-COVID levels. However, it remained 3% below those levels.

The International Air Transport Association said earlier this month that traffic worldwide in July was 95.6% compared to the same month in 2019.

Heathrow Airport, located in London, is the busiest airport in the United Kingdom. On Monday, the airport said that yearly traffic counts would stay below levels seen before the epidemic.
