Taiwan’s defense ministry said a Chinese naval formation commanded by the aircraft carrier Shandong entered the western Pacific for exercises 60 nautical miles (111km) southeast on Monday.
Since 5:40 a.m., the ministry has seen 11 Chinese military aircraft, including J-16 fighters, enter Taiwan’s air defense identification zone and make an “appropriate response.”
In April, the 2019-commissioned Shandong engaged in western Pacific Chinese military maneuvers off Taiwan. Also sailed via Taiwan Strait in June.
The second joint operation since June occurred on Saturday when a U.S. and Canadian warship went across the Taiwan Strait as their leaders attended the G20 conference in India.
China, which has never renounced using force to take Taiwan, has increased military exercises near the democratically controlled island in response to “collusion” with the U.S.
The Chinese carrier group’s presence in the Western Pacific in 2023 marks a strategic move by China in the Asia-Pacific region. This deployment includes a carrier escorting warships and submarines, showcasing China’s growing maritime capabilities.
One of the critical aspects of this deployment is its connection to territorial claims in the South China Sea. China’s assertiveness in these disputed waters has led to friction with neighboring countries, such as Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Philippines. This deployment directly reflects China’s ongoing efforts to assert its claims in the region.
The deployment of the Chinese carrier group has not gone unnoticed by the international community. Various countries, including the United States, Japan, and Australia, have expressed concerns about this move. They view it as a challenge to regional stability and have responded with increased military presence and cooperation
In conclusion, the presence of the Chinese carrier group in the Western Pacific in 2023 is a significant development with far-reaching implications. It underscores China’s growing military capabilities and raises concerns about regional stability and territorial disputes. As this situation continues to evolve, it is essential to closely monitor developments and diplomatic efforts to maintain peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
