General Motors has put itself in a bind with another recall that has left customers fearing their own cars. This marks the third recall on a set of SUVs with power window switches that are likely to catch fire, according to The Associated Press.
The severity of the recall is so extensive that customers have been asked to leave the SUVs outside until repairs have been made. This mechanical issue affects nearly 189,000 vehicles, and patience from these drivers is running low as the company announced the previous two recalls did not sufficiently fix the issue, according to Bidness Etc.
“We are recalling them because the fix that we put in did not work,” spokesman Alan Adler said Thursday. “We’re taking care of it. We’re doing the right thing,” said spokesman Alan Adler, according to The Associated Press.
Kenneth Feinberg, GM’s lawyer, has been reviewing the claims against the car company thus far. Feinberg told The Wall Street Journal that 65 people were killed after being subject to the unsafe vehicles. Other detrimental accidents have left nearly a dozen injured with others hospitalized.
“We are just beginning now to review the claims and the documentation, to see whether they are eligible. It will be well after Labor Day before we begin to draw some conclusions. We are encouraged by the early filings. It’s a good sign that owners are aware of the program and understand the program,” said Feinberg, according to The Wall Street Journal.
GM is trying to stay positive but is walking on thin ice with one of the biggest safety concerns it has ever encountered. The company tried to lower monetary costs from the first two recalls through attempting to fix rather than replace the defective parts, and now it is suffering from the repercussions.
The recalled models include the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainer, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 97-X from 2006 and 2007. The Associated Press reported that notification letters are to be sent to the SUV owners shortly, and follow-up reports will be sent regarding when new parts are obtainable.
