On Monday, Russia dismissed Japanese criticism of its Pacific Fleet naval maneuvers, saying it needed to prepare against several regional threats while focusingUkraine.

On Monday, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said Tokyo had protested Moscow’s military exercises in disputed islands near Hokkaido.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the drills were “in strict accordance with international law.”

“Many fronts are turbulent. “Regional conflicts abound,” Peskov told reporters. “We know these regional conflicts’ geography.”

Russia and Japan have disputed islands in the North Pacific since World War Two. As a result, Japan joined Western sanctions against Russia as a member of the G7 affluent democracies.

Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu met Putin on Sunday during Russia’s naval operations.

China and Russia announced a “no limits” alliance last year and have strengthened trade, diplomatic, and military ties since the Ukraine war began, culminating in Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Moscow last month.
