Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen met with senior security officials on Tuesday to discuss the “regional situation” before meeting with U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California, which Beijing has urged not happen.
If the Wednesday meeting goes through, China, which claims Taiwan, will retaliate.
China held military drills around Taiwan after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited in August.
According to Taiwan’s presidential office, Tsai convened the video conference from Belize, her penultimate Central American visit before heading to Los Angeles.
Tsai “listened to a briefing on the broader regional situation,” her office stated.
“The president asked relevant units to continue to comprehend the surrounding circumstances, and to allow the visiting delegation to continue to grasp the situation in real time,” it said, updating Tsai and her staff abroad.
The office said Tsai “expressed her thanks” to colleagues working to protect national security this week over a long weekend holiday.
The statement said National Security Council secretary-general Wellington Koo, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu, and National Security Bureau Director-General Tsai Ming-yen were in the conversation.
The president landed in Los Angeles Tuesday night and will return to Taipei Friday.
Taiwan has not detected any Chinese military activity before the McCarthy Summit.
On Wednesday, Chinese state media reported that a Fujian province Maritime Safety Administration ship patrolled the center and northern Taiwan Strait.
According to Chinese official media accounts, the Haixun 06 is a marine administrative law enforcement ship built for inspections and search and rescue missions.
