Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O) responded to Google’s (GOOGL.O) announcements this week by announcing updates to its widely used office software on Thursday.

Microsoft previewed a new AI “copilot” for Microsoft 365, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook communications. Microsoft claimed AI could provide a first draft in many apps, expediting content production and saving workers’ time.

The corporation, surpassing peers through investments in ChatGPT’s inventor OpenAI, also showed a new “business chat” experience that can extract data and do activities across Microsoft’s products on a user’s typed demand.

“We believe this next generation of AI will enable a new wave of productivity growth,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a live-streamed presentation.

This week’s news, including Adept’s new investment, shows how big and small firms compete to implement software that might change people’s work. On Tuesday, Microsoft and Alphabet Inc. announced AI tools for Gmail and a “magic wand” to generate prose in its word processor.

Last year’s ChatGPT chatbot launched, demonstrating the power of massive language models.

Microsoft’s new copilot uses such technologies to produce fresh content from old data. In addition, OpenAI released the more powerful GPT-4 this week.

Microsoft’s largest upgrade revealed how AI could unlock Excel’s computational prowess, formerly reserved for analysts, to anybody who can express a calculation in plain English.

Microsoft also demonstrated how its AI could summarize email chains and live virtual meetings in Teams collaboration software.
