On Tuesday, July 1, a federal judge overturned the conviction of a cannibal, who planned to kidnap, kill and cook women.
Former police officer Gilberto Valle walked out of Manhattan federal court with his mother, free to go home after Judge Paul Gardephe overturned his conviction.
The Chicago Tribune reported that Gardephe said there was not enough evidence to show Valle’s real intention of kidnapping, killing and eating women. He added the chat room records of Valle are not sufficient evidence, and the conversations never put anyone in danger.
According to NBC, Valle was happy to be freed after being locked up for 20 months.
“I want to take this opportunity to apologize to everyone I hurt, shocked and offended with my infantile behavior,” Valle said.
Valle was released on a $100,000 bond and was ruled to home detention with GPS monitoring. He will also receive mental health treatment and will not have internet access.
Elizabeth Valle, Valle’s mother, was eager to welcome her son home from jail. “I am going to cook him his favorite meal,” Elizabeth told the New York Post.
Valle’s wife found out in 2012 about Valle’s conversations and plans on his computer, and then reported it to the FBI. Valle was arrested in Oct. 2012, and convicted in March 2013, on the the conspiracy charge and a misdemeanor count of illegally accessing a law enforcement database.
