Waylon Chin is an entrepreneur and a businessman. He is the founder and CEO of First Serve Partners. This venture capital firm is for business leaders, influencers, and athletes.

First Serve Partners deals with media, entertainment, sports, etc., to engage the upcoming generation. They influence them to know how to invest their small capital and build a strategic relationship with others.

Waylon Chin spends most of his youth in Singapore. He was the top player in the tennis category at Raffles institution. Chin represented his country in Junior Grand Slam and also Junior Davis Cup. At 15, he had already taken space in professional tournaments. He played tennis at Illinois University before transferring to Miami University. He was ranked #1 in both singles and doubles in all the institutions.

Ian Chin set up GR8-Group as his first startup. The company was creating luxury travel and experiential industry for other companies. He had a pool of clients, including the Fortune & Global 500 like UBS and American Express. Then, after some years, he shifted to real estate and venture capital.

He started another company, First Serve Partners, where he collaborated with the world’s export firm Splyce. Currently, Waylon Chin is a board member at Spylce, Mimi Ventures, GR8 Group, and SnapLeads.

We worked in media, sports, and entertainment with my co-founder, Joey Brander. As athletes, we both grew our business minds. So, we thought of something that could take our relationship to the next level, even influencing our industry. Then, the idea of venture capital came up, and this was the best chance to leverage our relationship.

My typical day depends on the tasks available. We are always on our toes to collaborate with more companies on most occasions. During the day, do attend many meetings and conferences. Advisors and investors are always in demand. On some occasions, we help investors to build their portfolios.

With my partner Joey, we have to develop the best strategy t bring ideas to life. Best of all, we study and put theory into practice. Through what we experience daily in our investment plans, we learn from it. Another way is through improving our portfolios. When we test something, and it works for us, we g ahead to suggest the idea to another venture capitalist.

The expansion of eSports makes it fascinating. We started our investment when the industry was very tiny and unknown. As time goes by, the industry keeps on evolving. There is an increase in franchising leagues.

Patience is one of the strategies that makes me productive. When we positively impact our business, it means other entrepreneurs and investors will like us. I also believe in the idea of moving and making a decision fast. The best moments come when we sit down as a team, analyze and plan what we will do in the coming months.

To my younger Waylon Chin, trust your gut. In some situations, I don’t follow my intuition, which leads to failures. But whenever you want to win, keep on trying; consistency is important.

To any entrepreneurs outside there, reading is something essential. I have to set aside some time to focus on reading in my daily life. Despite your profession, reading is recommended. You must add knowledge to the existing mind. It builds a strong foundation on top of the other. Sometimes I read stories of other athletes, the hard work, the on and off pitch moments, and it provides good memories of my life.

Working on good deals and delivering a lot has made investors trust our company. We also work on growing our networks through the various data flows. To add to that, we make sure our brand is strong. We have to understand the position we are in to put in more effort to improve.

I failed a lot during my professional year as a junior athlete. Tennis is a game for solo or two players; you spend a lot of time in courts and traveling around the globe for tournaments. Whenever you lose your first game, you have to train your mind to accept reality and prepare for the next game. This character gave me a different look at failure and success. Through the setbacks and challenges, I opted for better preparations,

To that person looking for the business idea, you have to be smart, knowledgeable, and look for problems to solve. Analyze what you do in your daily life, the careers, space, and hobbies, and decide where you can add value.

Wiliam Thorndike has written a nice book entitled Their ‘Radically Rational Blueprint of Success to book lovers. There is more wisdom for those who crave to be CEOs. An innovative person will give you a different view of some common ideas if you are an innovative person.
