70 Jobs Affected as Packaging Company Shuts Louth Location

A significant employer in Louth, the packaging firm DS Smith, has confirmed the closure of its sheet-feeding operation, resulting in the redundancy of 70 roles. The company has initiated a phased closure, with most staff set to depart this week. A skeletal staff will remain at the Windsor Road site until its final closure in August.

DS Smith asserted that, despite efforts, there was no viable alternative to keeping the Louth site operational. The main production activities at the location ceased immediately, marking a substantial shift in the local employment landscape.

DS Smith explained the circumstances surrounding the decision in a statement provided to the BBC. A collective consultation period took place with the Trade Union and employee representatives at the Louth sheetfeeding site. Regrettably, no feasible alternative business proposals emerged during this process. Consequently, the company made the challenging decision to move forward with the proposal to close the site.

The company expressed its commitment to supporting all affected employees after this decision. As the closure unfolds, DS Smith will direct its efforts towards assisting those impacted by the cessation of operations at the Louth site.

This development not only marks a significant change for DS Smith but also has broader implications for the local community in Louth, where the closure of a major employer can have cascading effects on the economy and the lives of those directly affected. The closure underscores the economic challenges specific industries and regions face, highlighting the need for comprehensive support mechanisms for displaced workers and communities navigating such transitions.
