Russia sanctioned 333 Canadian officials, public personalities, and Olympians on Wednesday in retaliation for Canadian restrictions on Moscow and support for Ukraine.
Since the West sanctioned hundreds of Russian individuals and firms over the invasion of Ukraine, Russia has repeatedly barred Western leaders and celebrities from entering Russia.
The list, issued by Russia’s foreign ministry on Wednesday, includes Governor General Mary Simon, more than 250 regional legislative assembly members, and hundreds of Canadian athletes who have publicly backed a ban on Russian participants at the 2024 Olympics.
“This measure encourages those on the black list to change their behavior,” the ministry stated.
Russia targets five-time Olympic medalist ice dancer Tessa Virtue and six-time Olympian hockey player Hayley Wickenheiser.
